East Dulwich Family Home
The project began as an exercise to improve a confusing ground floor layout and replace a cramped old kitchen. Through careful design studies relating to budget costings we were able to show that this interesting, double-fronted “builder’s” house had the potential of becoming a stunning family home. Extra bedrooms and bathrooms were created in a mansarded attic extension, reached by a central stairway over the original entrance hall. At the rear of the house, piecemeal additions were swept away and a new kitchen family room created under an ingenious steel framework supporting the upper floors. A huge skylight with opening panels was devised in the flat roof over the family room, its shape reflecting the angled plan form of the house, creating dramatic shapes of glazing and ceiling.
